NY Mets Discussions

On May 8, 1961, the New York Mets adopted their current name as an abbreviation for their corporate name of the New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc. On November 16th of that same year, sports cartoonist Ray Gatto while playing blackjack with friends, came up and designed their logo which has remained virtually unchanged since his first design. The image of the bridge across the orange baseball stitching symbolizes that the Mets play for all five boroughs in New York City. The Mets played their first game at Shea Stadium on April 17, 1964, which unfortunately resulted in a loss to the Pirates at 3-4. On May 11, 1972, the franchise made what would turn out to be one of the greatest trades in its history when it traded its pitcher Charlie Williams for a San Francisco Giants outfielder by the name of Willie Mays. The team has recorded two world championships, with a win over the Orioles in 1969 and the Boston Red Sox in 1986.

The all time leading home run hitter is Darryl Strawberry with 252 home runs, followed by Mike Piazza who hit 220. The highest batting averages are owned by John Olerud at .315 and David Wright at .308. The most hits were batted by Ed Kranepool at 1,418 followed by Cleon Jones at 1,188. The most strikeouts thrown are by Tom Seaver with a total of 2,541 followed by Dwight Gooden who threw 1,875. The lowest career ERA is held by Tom Seaver at 2.57 followed by Jesse Orosco at 2.73.

The club closed its doors on a 45 year legacy of playing in Shea Stadium at the end of 2008 with the final images of Tom Seaver and Mike Piazza heading toward the Center Field gate in the shadow of their new stadium the Citi Field. The total capacity of the new stadium is 41,800 while boasting that the seats are two inches wider than at Shea Stadium and offering additional legroom. This along with the 31% increase in public toilets over Shea with a ratio of 1 toilet for every 70 people is an attempt to make the amenities world class.

2009 is a promising year for more than just the stadium. Already this year the Mets feature an interesting stat of nine triples by nine different players which both leads the league in total number of triples and is also a franchise record for the first time this feat has been accomplished with nine different people. Omir Santos cracked his first major league home run, a grand slam against Florida. This slam will go down in history as the first grand slam ever in the new Citi Field facility. Johan Santana leads the National League, and is second in the majors with a 0.70 ERA, behind only Kansas Citys Zack Greinke. Santana also leads the majors with 37 strikeouts on the year so far. The team currently has two players leading the league in batting average with centerfielder Carlos Beltran hitting .395 and second baseman Luis Castillo hitting .370.
